Getting Away from Siding Installation

It might be a good idea to ask friends or family members to use their homes as a short-term daytime escape. If you work from home, then you might want to find a temporary office or workspace to use throughout the process. You should also make your contractor aware if you are a stay-at-home parent or if you operate a business out of your home office. When possible, a good contractor will do his best to get the job done as quickly as possible so your life can quickly return to normal.

As a courtesy, you might also want to notify your neighbors of the impending siding installation project. This will give them the ability to make alternate plans to avoid having to suffer through several days of noise.

Clear the walls: When it comes to siding installation, sometimes the pressure from the outside walls of your house can impact the inside walls. It's a good idea to remove all valuables from your walls, including paintings, framed photographs, and mirrors, before the installation begins. Store these items in a basement or spare bedroom to avoid them getting damaged during the siding installation process.

Be prepared for some strange things to happen: Some homes - especially those that are older - are built with sheet rock that is nailed in, not screwed in. As a result, during siding installation
, it is possible for the outside banging to cause nails to pop out of the sheetrock. This won't cause any structural damage, but nail pops are known to be rather unsightly. While it is rare for this to happen, as a consumer, it never hurts to be aware that siding installation can bring about some strange and unpleasant side effects. If you own an older home and have never had siding previously installed, then you might want to discuss this risk with your contractor.

Preparing for New Siding

You've made an appointment to have siding installed on your property. While you're undoubtedly excited at the prospect of a fresh new look for your home, you're also probably wondering to what extend the installation process will affect your day to day routine.

Expect things to get messy: During siding installation, the outside of your house is bound to turn into one giant mess. Make sure to remove all planters, furniture, and miscellaneous items from your porch and patio before the work begins so that they don't get damaged. If you have a garden area to the side of your house and you don't want it trampled, mark off the area and let your contractor know where it is so that he and his crew can do their best to avoid ruining it.

Get ready for some noise: Siding installation is not always a quiet process, and the noise levels might get a bit unpleasant over the course of the project. Sure, some noise here and there is bearable But given the length of the installation from start to finish, those who tend to be home during the day might want to make other plans. Remember that while shorter siding jobs can take two or three days, longer jobs can take more than a week depending on the size of the house, the materials in question, and the circumstances at play.If you have babies or pets at home, then you should know that a moderate amount of ruckus might translate into a greater disturbance if sensitive ears are consistently exposed to the noise.

Maintaining Your Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding in New York is one of the most popular siding materials out there right now. There are so many benefits to using this type of siding in Brooklyn compared to other siding and when you see how durable it is, you can see why everyone is choosing it these days. It is such a low maintenance material and, although you won't have to worry about it as much as other materials for siding in Queens, you still want to know how to take care of it so that you can help it last even longer and show the color as brightly as the day you installed it.

Although vinyl siding in New York does not need a lot of work there are a few things you should keep in mind and check for occasionally. There are many cleaners out there that will loosen up the dirt that builds up and, even though they will do a great job, you may need to invest in a power washer. You can put it on a low setting and be able to clean off any dirt, mold or mildew buildup and it is an easy way to keep it clean. Power sprayers will allow you reach higher parts of your home than you can just standing on the ground, making your cleaning process a lot easier.

If, after you used a power washer for your siding in New York, there are still some tough buildups, you may need to use a household cleaning product to scrub it off. Remember that as you are choosing a product not to use anything that may contain bleach, as this can discolor and damage your siding in the Bronx. If you feel that you need to test it, use an area that is seen little and spray a little cleaner and see if any discoloration occurs. This will help you determine whether the cleaning agent will do any damage to your siding in Brooklyn.

The Best Kind of Paint for Your Siding

Before you start painting the siding, make sure the surface is clean. The siding will likely have accumulated mildew and dirt over the years. You can clean the siding by hand washing or with a power washer. If you don't own a power washer and don't know any one willing to lend one to you, you may be able to rent one from a local hardware store.

The best type of paint for your siding is high-grade acrylic latex paint. It has great bonding capabilities and will expand and contract with the vinyl siding without cracking. Apply the paint to the vinyl siding when in the shade if possible.

If you decide to use a different color scheme for the siding, make sure the new color is lighter than the original. If you use a darker color, the siding will absorb more heat. The heat could negatively affect your siding. It could lead to buckling or warping of the siding.

Can You Paint Your Vinyl Siding?

Over the past 20 or so years, technological breakthroughs have resulted in vinyl siding being the most popular type of siding used on houses today. Thanks to increases in technology, vinyl siding can now be installed at a low price and requires almost no maintenance for as long as you have it. If you own a house or are thinking of buying a house that had vinyl siding applied prior to these technological breakthroughs, however, the siding may appear faded and in need of repair.

Before you think about spending some money on a new siding job, consider the option of painting the vinyl siding. You can regain the new home look and you can even change your home to a new color of siding.

Before beginning to paint over the vinyl siding, contact a vinyl siding professional. An experienced siding contractor will be able to determine whether the siding is worth painting over or whether you would be better off getting completely new siding. Additionally, you can find out how much it would cost to hire someone to paint the siding for you and then decide whether or not you want to do it yourself.

One of the major benefits of vinyl siding is that it requires very little maintenance. With a good siding job, you will have to put in a minimal amount of effort into keeping the it clean and sharp looking. You lose this benefit if you decide to paint. You might need to repaint the siding every 10 years.

What the Siding Experts Say

Siding experts have also found that longer panels create a more aesthetic and secure installation. When panels are 20' to 25' long, smaller houses can enjoy a seamless finish. Larger houses will have the fewest number of seams possible. This also makes the finished product tighter, more weather proof and stronger.

When you choose vinyl siding, you will have your choice of a wide range of colors and grains. You can choose something that resembles a traditional wood grain, or a completely smooth finish. Colors range from neutral earth tones, to slightly brighter reds and blues. You also are not limited to traditional, horizontal siding.

You can choose siding that has additional insulation on the back of it to make your home even warmer on those cold winter nights. You can select siding that installs in lines vertically or horizontally. Or you can go for a highly traditional look with siding that looks like cedar shakes or shingles. Vinyl siding can be installed by roofing contractors as well as siding contractors.

Why Most People Prefer Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding has increased both in popularity and quality over the years and has grown to be a major competitor in the siding industry. Vinyl offers many advantages over other materials, despite being less expensive than most other options. It is a durable choice, one that homeowners can expect to enjoy for several decades. Wind, sun, rain and snow are no match for the durability of vinyl.

Siding contractors are familiar with the damage that the harsh winters can inflict on siding, and they have found that vinyl siding withstands the conditions. Even in northern states, the sun can beat down on a house in the summertime and fatigue other materials. However, vinyl siding will not fade even under the drastic conditions that the northern states have to contend with. This means that you will never again have to face the chore of painting your house.

Contractors recommend vinyl siding as an excellent choice for any homeowner looking to reduce the maintenance requirements of their home. Many roofing companies highly recommend vinyl siding. This new system locks tightly together to help make your home more weather tight. New York can face high damaging winds, and when you choose vinyl siding with this feature, you won't have to worry about the siding panels lifting or separating from each other.

How Much is Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl siding creates a fresh-painted look and it doesn't scratch, peel, or flake. You can customize your siding job to satisfy your tastes and differentiate your home from other houses with siding. Perhaps the biggest benefit of vinyl siding, though, is the cost.

When vinyl siding was first introduced, it was not considered inexpensive. Over time, technology has gotten better and vinyl siding is now within reach of most homebuyers.

As an estimate, plan on spending between $2 and $10 per linear foot of siding. The overall cost of the siding will vary depending on factors such as style, quality, thickness, durability, insulative properties, installation, and UV protection.

Remember that there are many benefits associated with the cost of installing vinyl siding. You are getting an exterior surface that will maintain its value for a long time with almost no maintenance. When you pay whatever amount to have the siding installed, you enjoy the peace of mind of not having to spend a lot of money in the future to maintain the quality of the siding.

When you take into account the cost of siding and the installation, you will find that vinyl siding is generally less expensive than bricks or metal. Additionally, vinyl siding won't deteriorate in the same manner as wood, which may often form hazardous splinters.

Where to Find the Professional Siding Installers

Another option that you have is searching the Internet for siding businesses around you. One good thing about using the Internet is that there are often reviews and discussion boards on the siding companies. The reviews that are found here should be taken for what they are since you do not know exactly who is posting them or how their siding turned out.

The last option you have when searching for someone to install siding on your home is the phone book. You can look up a variety of different things including both siding and construction. If the company that you contact does not do siding they may be able to refer you to another company that does specialize in installing siding.

Installing siding is a big project. You should only consider putting up your own siding if you have experience with the type of siding that you are installing and feel comfortable that you can do a good job installing it. If you install your siding wrong you may have to have it removed and reinstalled a few years down the road. Make sure your siding is installed as it should be and that the siding is maintained after it is put up. This way you will be able to maximize the life of your exterior siding.

The Right People to Install Your Siding

Vinyl Siding is a very popular option when people are finishing the exterior of their homes. Since siding is fairly easy to install and can look great even years after it is installed when maintained properly. When you are considering installing siding you will need to decide if you feel comfortable enough putting the siding up yourself or if you would rather find a professional to do it for you.

There are many different types of siding so before construction even starts you will want to look at the different siding options that are available and choose the option that will work best for you. You will want to consider the look that you are going for, the type of weather you have around your home, rules for siding that the local home owners association may have, and any local government laws dealing with different siding materials and types.

If you decide to have a professional install your siding you have a few different options to find a suitable installer. Your first option is getting referrals from friends, neighbors or relatives in your area that have recently added siding to their homes. By asking for referrals you will hopefully find a siding professional that you can trust to do a good job installing the siding for a price that is competitive and fair.

What Does Vertical Siding Have to Offer?

Vertical vinyl siding need not be limited to your home. You may have a barn, for example, or a doghouse in need of a new siding job. Look at the additional structures in relation to your home and determine whether they would look better
with vertical siding.

Vertical siding can come in many different colors and grains. As an example, you could use siding that resembles wood to give your home an old-fashioned barn look. The color you choose can be supplemented by choosing a good contrasting shutter color.

An important thing to remember with regards to upgrading the siding on your home is how it can relate to the overall value of your home. If you take the time to make sure the job is done well and that the vertical siding enhances the appearance, your home will be of much more value. If you decide to sell, you will get much better offers.

Vertical siding can also do wonders as far as enhancing the appearance of your home. If you are interested in vinyl siding, take some time to find out what style suits your preferences and put some thought into using both vertical and horizontal siding.

Ever Thought About Vertical Siding?

If you want to enjoy the benefits of vinyl siding but want to have a more unique look, you might want to consider vertical siding. Horizontal siding is the more common method, but vertical may look even better given your style of house and preferences.

Vinyl siding can offer cost and feature benefits. The siding will handle severe weather without losing its quality and requires very little maintenance. Vertical siding is no different from the more traditional horizontal siding, meaning you can enjoy all the benefits of siding while adding a unique twist.

Your home can be given a new siding job with either complete vertical siding or vertical siding in addition to horizontal siding. Look at the shape of your home and see which option works the best in your situation. For example, some homes have vertical siding on the top half and horizontal siding on the bottom half.

If you do too much mixing with the vertical and horizontal siding, it may detract from you home's overall appearance. Also, too much detail can add to the cost if the installer has to keep switching from horizontal to vertical. Look for patterns and find certain features of the house that could benefit from the contrast.

Solar Cell Roofing

Solar cell roofing made from solar shingles or solar panels is being increasingly incorporated into the construction of new residential and commercial buildings. In many areas, people are choosing to replace their conventional roof with a solar roof when it is time for maintenance. And most of these people would tell you that the long-term value, or short-term increase is resale interest, made it worthwhile.

A solar cell roof is called "building integrated", also known by the more complete name "building integrated photovoltaic" (BIPV). BIPV suggests that you would have needed that part of the structure built anyway, and you've chosen to use material that will also serve the purpose of generating power through solar energy. The first advantage of solar cell shingles or panels on the roof is obvious: some of the initial cost is paid by lowering the overall material and labor costs involved in the construction. The second advantage is that the BIPV does not stand out - it is a normal and expected part of the design and structure of the building. These two advantages often make bipv solar roofing the clear choice over rooftop wind turbines, raised solar panels, and backyard windmills which both stand out and cost a lot more to build and install.

In some parts of the world, often due to government subsidies, many new houses are built with solar roofs. Until recently, this was not the case in the U.S., UK, and much of Europe because the cost remained prohibitive. However, with the invention of what is called "thin film solar technology", solar roofing tiles, panels and shingles have become easier to fabricate and work with and are much more aesthetically pleasing. This technology is best for pitched roofs where shingles or small tiles are the norm. Large flat roofs, such as the tops of many commercial buildings, can have one giant layer of solar film, or large integrated panels.

Let's Compare Roofing Materials

The materials that you choose for the roofing of your house are of critical importance, whether you are building a new property or replacing an existing one.

The roofing protects your house from the weather and also becomes a part of the insulation of the building and can have an effect on your heating bills. The types of material you choose can also have insurance implications as there is a greater risk of fire associated with some types. One important factor to consider is the location of your property as different types of materials works well in various locations. If you are familiar with an area you will also be aware of the types of materials that are used on most of the properties in that area. If you are not an expert, it is always worth speaking to a professional in the area and asking for his advice.

When considering this type of project, you will need to decide if you are going to do the job yourself or you plan on calling a professional roofing contractor. Remember even though you have the best materials in the world, if not installed correctly, they will be a waste of money and materials. Trying to mend or replace parts of the roofs once it is fit, can cost a fortune and prove to be very difficult.

In the present economic climate a lot of people are looking at having solar panels incorporated into their roofing. As well as being environmentally friendly, they can also save you money on your bills once they are installed.

Tiles are one of the most popular forms of material. They are durable, fireproof and available in many different styles and colors.

Metal is of course very strong and will last a life time and is also highly fire resistant. It is used in a lot of commercial as well as residential premises. As its popularity grows, so does the number of colors and styles to choose from.

Fiberglas shingles are replacing the traditional asphalt shingles that were used on a large proportion of homes earlier.

Evaluating Your Roof

If you feel your roof is reaching that 20-year mark, take some time to evaluate it carefully. Go into your attic and inspect the underside of the roof deck for stains and wet spots that indicate small leaks are present. Roof leaks appear dry with dark rings on the edges, somewhat like a coffee stains. Spotting leaks at this point is always better than spotting them when they are substantial enough to drip onto your ceilings.

If you can walk on your roof, take a walk to see if the surface looks good. Inspect the surface granules on your shingles. If they are wearing off, your roof is nearing the end of its expected lifespan and will need to be repaired or replaced. If the shingles are starting to warp and curl, you need to think about having a roofing contractor give you an estimate on roof repair as soon as possible, because you are nearing the point where repair is not possible and you will have to fully replace the roof.

If you find that you need a new roof, consider hiring a qualified roofing contractor, rather than a general handyman. This improves the likelihood that the job will be done well, and it also helps your new roof to have a longer life expectancy. It's far better to pay a little more now and have the roof last longer, than to face the need to replace it again not far down the road.

Your Roof's Lifespan

If you have a roof, you need to understand its expected lifespan in order to make wise decisions about roof repairs and roof replacement needs. The roofing materials and many other factors play a role in the length of time your roof should last. For instance, asphalt-based shingles can usually last up to 50 years, while older used materials last closer to 15. Understanding these factors is crucial before making any decisions regarding your roof.

Materials

Asphalt and metal are the longest-lasting materials on your roof. Wood shakes are some of the shortest-lived roofs, with a life span of 14 to 20 years. High quality asphalt roofing materials can last between 20 and 50 years, depending on your location. Metal roofs can last between 40 and 50 years. In most situations, however, a roof is not made from pure asphalt or pure metal, so it will need to be replaced at around the 20-year mark.

Other Factors

Other factors play a role in how long your roof will last. Roofing material that is exposed to frequent weather changes will not last as long as material that is in a fairly mild climate. Extremes of any sort, whether it be cold, heat, humidity, or precipitation, will wear away your roof faster than its expected lifespan. The peak of the roof also plays a roll, as it impacts how directly the roof is exposed to the elements.

In addition, the quality of the workmanship used when installing the roof will play a role. If plywood decking is used, the roof may last longer than if composite is used. The quality of the underlayment also plays a role, and should be chosen based on the environmental factors that will affect the roof.

A Checklist for Your New Roof

Installing shingles is a job that needs to be done with the utmost care. Making sure you are ready to shingle is the first thing that needs to be addressed. Go through these details before starting to shingle a roof. Make sure you have verified the contract with the homeowner. Listing the correct shingle type, the correct color, and detailing all the finishes and tiny details that go along with the job. Make sure that the job site is safe. The ladders and/or scaffolds should be secure; the job site itself should be in a well organized manner and safe. The homeowner should also be aware of any hazardous areas. The roofing material should be properly stored at all times and fall protection is needed to be put in place.

The deck should be dry and flat before starting any shingle installation job. The under-layment's that protect the deck are to be properly installed using weather watch or storm guard leak barrier, and also using shingle-mate or deck armor roof deck protection should be laying flat and not buckle up. The drip edge has to be flush to the deck to be considered properly installed. The roof deck protection should be over the eaves and under the rake edge.

Starting to shingle is where you should start the job. The back of the roof, which should be the least visible area to work out any unusual details. Do corner your team; roofers work the fastest when reaching across their bodies. Left handed roofers are faster starting on the right; right handed roofers are faster starting on their left.

The Roofing System

A new roof is a totally complex, integrated system of components that protects your biggest investment, your home. A complete roofing system has many components that make up the roofing system. The roof deck, a premium roof deck protection, protective leak barrier, pre-cut starter shingles, quality roofing shingles, attic ventilation, ridge cap shingles, reliable low slope membrane, and accessory paint.

A roof deck is the structural part of the home itself. It is usually made of plywood and protects the home from the elements. One of the most vulnerable parts of any roof would be where any two surfaces come together or where any pipes or skylights come into the roof. This can also be in the valleys. All these places are where water can sneak in; GAF offers a roof leak barrier that actually molds itself to the roof. If you live in an area of high winds you should put the leak barriers at both the eaves and the rakes of the roof.

The roof deck protection is a component you cannot see. Roof deck leak protection is like insurance for your shingles. Regular roof tar paper can rip, wrinkle, and buckle under the shingles. Instead, GAF offers a great alternative to regular tar paper. Trapped moisture can cause decay and rot. Using GAF's special advanced synthetic product will protect the roof for many years to come.

Starter strips are the most unappreciated roofing product. You have to lay a row of starter strips before you start laying the shingles so to keep the first row of regular shingles from blowing off in a strong wind. For maximum protection you will also need to install starter strips at the rakes. This can really make a difference in the life of your roof.

Go Green With Your Roof!

The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has been trying to come up with roof materials and plans which help to save energy. Since it is the only part of the building which remains exposed to sun, it tends to absorb a lot of energy thereby increasing cooling costs.

Environmental Benefits Of Green Roofs

Apart from a marked decrease in cooling costs, green roofing technology has helped reduce heat loss and energy consumption during winter months also. They help bring down storm water run-off and filter pollutants especially carbon dioxide out of the air.

They also help increase the life span of the roof and also contribute to LEED points for the building. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification provides independent, third-party verification for your building project and determines if the building is indeed environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work at.

Green Roofs - Save Money and the Environment

Generally, it consists of a vegetative layer grown on rooftops. These roofs provide shade and help reduce heat and temperature of the surface and surrounding air. Depending on the load capabilities and the structure of your building, many include a variety of grasses, flowers or trees of different heights. In these systems, plants and soil replace the conventional roof coverings and the same layer of plants and soil protects the water proofing membrane.

Installing a green roof is a complex task and it is best to consult a landscape architect and an independent roofing contractor to analyze the effectiveness for your home or office.

Roofing Contractor

You should contact several roofing contractors before arriving at a decision. Ask your builder or friends for recommendations on roofing contractors. A Commercial Roofing Contractor

When you're looking for a roofer for your commercial roofing project you need to find a contractor who understands the special needs of a commercial roofing project. For example it can be harder to work on a business during business hours so either the business has to be shut down for the repair or replacement or the job has to be done after conventional business hours. Is the roofer you are considering for the job willing and able to work around your schedule constrictions which might involve working weekends or evenings?

When you begin your search for a roofing contractor not only do you need to answer those questions but you also want to find someone that will do a high quality job without a lot of time delays. Going about finding someone can seem like an obstacle in itself but there are some ways to make the search easier.

Ask friends and family for referrals and try to find at least three contractors to give you written bids on your job. Before you go any further you need to make sure that the contractors you are considering are fully licensed and bonded. A simple search with the state contractor's board will verify if your roofer is licensed and if there are any past judgments or claims against their license.

Once you select three or four roofers to place bids, you should prepare yourself for the bids to be widely varied. Roofers will have brand preferences that will vary and may factor in more or less than the next guy for a labor estimate. The more detailed a written bid is the more helpful it will be for you to see where the cost are going to be incurred. Don't, however, select a roofer based solely on the bid price. Any low ball bids may be tempting to take, but if they are low because of poor quality workman ship it may not be worth it in the end.

Go With the Pros for Commercial Roofing

As the owner of a business, you know how important maintenance is to your building. Most companies have a maintenance man (or crew, for larger companies) that takes care of the interior and exterior aspects of the building. This is typically inclusive of electrical and plumbing repairs, overloaded gutter systems, paint touch ups and even issues that arise with the heating and cooling system. Commercial roofing, however, is a whole other ballgame. Most states require roofers to be licensed and a typical maintenance crew leader is not. For repairs and replacements on the roof, a professional needs to complete the job.

Having an unlicensed, uninsured individual doing repairs on a business’s roof can be a huge liability. If the individual were to get hurt, you would be held responsible for any and all costs pertaining to pain, suffering and medical care. Beyond that, if the person makes a mistake, you have no recourse. Everything may seem fine when he leaves the job, but a week later during a downpour you realize that the ceiling may as well be Swiss cheese. What do you do then? Since the person that did the work was unlicensed, uninsured and likely not incorporated, you really have no place to turn. You will end up spending more money to have a pro come in to repair the work that was already paid for and completed, albeit incorrectly.

When you need commercial roofing repairs completed, it is best to do a little fact checking. Get a license number from the contractor and cross-reference that with the state’s database. Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure complaints have not been filed. Ask to see a copy of the business’s liability insurance policy, and then call the administering agent to make sure the insurance is active and covers the scope of your project. If any of these areas seem a bit muddled or grey, look for a different roofing contractor.

Pitched Roof or Flat Roof?

The battle between pitched roofs versus flat roofs is an ongoing one especially when you are thinking of which is the best choice for your home or building. The answer for this typically varies depending on the mainly on the local climates and the needs of your building.

In certain countries where there is heavy downpour of rain that can result with high risk of water leakages on the building top, pitched roofs are considered the best choice. From a practical standpoint, it has the higher capacity to evacuate the water away from the building below while a flat roof has the ability to retain water on the top of the building. Stagnant water on top of building with flat roofs will find a way to go down and this can be damaging to your building and the carpets and furniture inside it.

Houses that are built using this type of roof go way back as they are most efficient in water evacuation. The design has been used for some time now that it is considered the best way to have your home or building complement the landscape even with a house that can have a modern look and style.

From a technical perspective, there is a need for water to be directed correctly on a pitched roof to prevent concentration of water in some areas such as spaces that are being obstructed by walls or water that is directed towards the house or building itself. It is important that the architecture of is made with a goal to really remove water and not letting it stagnate onto your home.

To Know About Your Siding

First and foremost, siding is applied to the outermost layer of a wall during building construction. It is meant to protect the house from the effects of hostile weather. It also allows water to be shed so that it does not damage the building.

Different types of material can be used as siding. The exterior cladding of a building can consist of wood, plastic or composite materials. This can be directly attached to the building structure or framework by means of studs. It can also be fastened via an intermediate layer of horizontal planks, termed "sheathing". Building paper is another important part the exterior cladding of a building, as it is the base to which the cladding is attached.

There are a large variety of materials that can be used on the exterior of a building. These include wood, stucco, cement, brick or brick veneers and even steel. The material you use should be chosen with the final effect in mind. Materials like stucco, cement, wood and brick or brick veneers give a warm, domestic air to the building. Except for wood, the maintenance of these siding materials is quite easy, and no extra painting needs to be done.

Steel is an extremely durable material that is capable of withstanding the expansion and contraction brought about by temperature changes. There is no worry about making the building look cold and forbidding as it is available in wood veneers as well.

When you plan to install the exterior cladding for your building project, it is important to pay attention to the workmanship. This is because even the best and most long-lasting materials will not be effective if they are installed in a slipshod manner. Don't be shy to ask questions of your building contractor. Or, if you're doing the work yourself, read all you can about the task before you begin.

Fiberglass Roofing...For Real?

When properly laid, GRP roofing or glass fibre roofing as it is more commonly known will last for a minimum of 30 years with very little deterioration. There are however a few key tips you must remember in order to get the most out of a GRP roof. Firstly the roof should be laid on a dry deck and preferably in dry conditions with a temperature not below 5°C.

Secondly you must ensure that the resins and top coats should be suitably for use in roofing. When applying the GRP laminate and top coat, the deck should be of 18 mm exterior plywood or Sterling Board and be well fixed onto the underlying joists. Usually it takes two men about a day to strip, re-deck, laminate and top coat a roof of about 20 square metres.

Always try to plan starting the roof when a settled period of weather is forecast and ensure the new deck is laid to adequate falls to allow for good drainage. There should not be any standing water on the roof after completion.

Stucco Contractors in New York

Getting a new roof done requires lots of thinking. You have to think about what style will suit your home, the materials that are most apt for the weather in your city and also the pricing. Beyond these general features, what's also important to consider is if the roofing type you select is eco-friendly as this is something that's of much importance now-a-days.

Roof Repair and Estimates...Are They for Real?

Before you go out and form a contract with a roofing contractor, roof repair estimates are going to be required. If you are doing a home, a business, or a motorhome, taking a bit of time to get a better price is a good idea. Here in this informative article, we will see some of the facts about roof repair estimates and what to do.

If you have extensive roof damage, a roof repair estimate may be less than what you need. Before you go out and hire a contractor to repair a roof, make sure you do not have enough damage to need a replacement roof. Do not go out on your roof if you suspect rafters may be weakened or rotten through water leaks. Also, if you go out onto your roof, wear flat soled shoes to prevent more damage. If you have asphalt shingles, tile shingles, a metal roof, or even a slate roof, get a specialist for your type of roof to tell you if you need repair or if you need replacement of your roof. Roof repair estimates should not take that long from an experienced contractor, and they should be happy to help you.

Depending on who you ask, the advice to get " three free roof repair estimates " may not be good enough. A contractor's time is of course, just as valuable as yours. Nevertheless, for you to get the best price may not always mean you get the best service for the price. Ask your neighbors who they used for their roof. Ask your family who they used also. Calling around to get those free estimates runs the risk of making your contractor overly busy and giving a less-than-quality job to you or someone else. Call the Better Business Bureau. Do your due diligence, but getting " free roof repair estimates " from too many contractors may end up working against you.

Stucco is Durable and Attractive

Well built stucco homes are very incredibly strong and can easily last for hundreds years. For a new home, the use of stucco can add amazing value and character. Stucco is composed of an aggregate, a binder and water. The traditional stucco is made of lime, sand and water, while modern stucco is made of Portland cement, sand and water.

It is used for coating of the wall and ceiling of a house. Lime is often added in a mixture of modern stucco with a function to decrease the permeability and increase the workability of modern stucco. Acrylics and glass fibers are sometimes added to improve the structural properties of as stucco.

Warning Signs of Bad Roofing Contractors

Looking for someone to do your house repairs can be a long and tricky business. New York Roofing Contractors are consistently on the higher-end for number of complaints put against them, even compared to general house repair businesses. If you need to hire a roofing contractor, take the time to do some research. You do not want to end up with poor work or a shady deal, it's more trouble than it's worth. Here are a few tips of what to watch out for when choosing your contractor.

Quality Comes at a Price

1 - Even though quality roofing contractors are more expensive to hire, they are worth it! Instead of springing for the lowest estimate, take take to check the companies' background. Look for their qualifications, the materials they use, and their experience.

2 Creepy contractors will sometimes try to pull a fast one with estimates. The numbers may be low, too low to include everything needed. Halfway through the project they'll surprise you by demanding unexpected costs, raising the overall price.

3 - Are the workers insured? Are you? Repairing roofs and houses is physically demanding and potentially dangerous. If an accident occurs, you may be subject to liability. Protect yourself beforehand by making sure that everyone involved is adequately covered.

Disadvantages of Stucco

Of course, stucco does come with a few disadvantages.

Stucco is expensive
In the grand scheme of siding materials, siding can certainly cost a pretty penny. Those with limited home improvement budgets might find that stucco is, unfortunately, out of reach.

A longer installation process
Stucco is one of the more difficult materials to install, and as a result, stucco installation tends to take longer than the average vinyl or wood siding installation. Homeowners who wish to have stucco siding installed should prepare themselves for a few extra days of construction.

And a few quick specifics
Cement stucco is extremely rigid. So if the foundation of the home on which it is installed begins to shift, then the stucco is likely to crack. Synthetic stucco is less rigid but has been known to trap moisture, causing walls to become rotted and degraded. In addition, synthetic stucco has been blamed for mold problems arising in homes with moisture damage. The good news is that installation techniques have improved to reduce the chances of these types of problems. Additionally, modern-day synthetic stucco is now fitted with a grooved foam backing that allows moisture to properly drain out.

The bottom line
Stucco provides the perfect combination of durability and aesthetic appeal. While it does have its drawbacks, stucco can instantly work to increase the value of one's home. If your budget allows for it, then treat yourself to the timeless elegance and curb appeal that has become synonymous with stucco.

What is Stucco?

Within the world of siding, stucco is regarded as one of the most elegant, stylish materials available on the market. Traditional stucco siding is made by combining Portland cement, sand, lime, and water. This mixture is then applied, sometimes in multiple coats, for a household exterior that is both durable and eye-catching.

Many consumers don't realize that there are actually two types of stucco presently in use. The first is what people might refer to as the "real" stucco, since it's the same type that's been around for years. "Real" stucco, also known as cement stucco, is a solid material that gets directly applied to the surface of a home for an almost rock-like covering. By contrast, the new, synthetic form of stucco is much more hollow than its cement counterpart. Synthetic stucco consists of foam board materials that are applied to the surface of the home and then given a classic stucco finish. While the two types of stucco are quite similar in appearance, synthetic stucco offers the added benefit of superb insulation.

Of course, as is the case with all siding materials, stucco comes with its own specific set of pros and cons. First, the advantages:

Stucco is resilient and long-lasting
When it comes to siding materials, stucco is certainly one of the most durable. Stucco is heat and fire resistant, which makes it not only strong, but safe. Additionally, stucco usually comes with a weather-resistant finish that minimizes cracks and helps it withstand the test of time.

Looking for Wall Siding?

One of the best ways to protect the exterior of your home is to make use of wall siding on the walls of your home. You can also use these tiles on the roof as they are water resistant and also do not transmit outer temperature to the rooms. Thus they can help you maintain your room temperature for long time. People have been using this technique to protect their homes from harsh and severe weather long ago in the history. However, its shapes and types have undergone a number of changes to maximize the benefit of such covering for walls of your home.

The first most important feature of wall siding tiles is that they come in different designs, shapes and colors. Also they differ in quality and durability. But accordingly, their price also varies. However, this enables you to select the wall tiles according to your choice living within your budget. Secondly, these tiles are also durable and can protect your home from changing weather for a long time. You do not require to replace them every year or so. This is definitely a money saving feature of these wall siding tiles.

Another beneficial feature of vinyl insulated tiles, which is actually very important, is that they can help you lower your monthly energy bills. It seems quite strange but believe me it is really possible to save a lot of money on your utility bills. It is because when you use insulated vinyl sidings on your roof and walls, they prevent outer temperature to transmit in your rooms and thus your cooling or heating device will work less, which will ultimately reduce your monthly expenditure on gas or electricity charges. There are also a number of other beneficial features of siding tiles like easy to maintain, low cost installation, good looking and so on.

Cedar Shake Siding; A Revolution

Cedar shake siding weathers to an attractive rustic look on a home or building, and is an extremely popular siding style for coastal homes. However, given siding prices, you may want to consider doing the work yourself. While working around windows and doors takes finesse and flashing know-how, a few simple tips can get you going. All you need are some cedar shakes, nails, and a few tools, and you can be well on your way to becoming a cedar shake siding installer.

Getting Started on a Cedar Shake Siding Installation

The first step in getting ready for your shake siding installation is to make sure your surface is ready. Old siding should be removed, and it can be a good idea to install a new water resistant barrier on your home or building. The barrier is usually available in different sized rolls; choose one that is easy to work with.

Install your trim boards at the corners of the building and around any windows and doors. Cedar lumber can make attractive trim boards for cedar shake siding, and you can either paint them for a contrasting appearance or use the same finish you plan to use on the shakes.

Install a starter strip of shingles along the lowest point of the building you expect your shingles to cover. This starter strip is covered by your cedar shakes, so it can be a different type of material. The starter strip holds the first row of shakes out to match the shakes overlapping other shakes.

You now know how to install siding, and ready to start your cedar shake siding project! The materials you may need for the project are:

* Cedar shakes
* Tape measure
* Chalk line
* 6 D Galvanized nails
* Jigsaw
* A portable table saw can be handy

Install your first row of shakes and work your way up the side of the building. You have the choice of keeping each row of shakes even, or stagger the bottom edges for an even more rustic look. Use two nails in the top of each shingle so they are concealed by the next row of shingles. Use your jigsaw to trim shakes as needed.

Tips for Maintaining Your Roof

Taking care of roofing may be the most important property maintenance job you do all year. A damaged roof will only get worse over time, and could end up costing big money if it's not taken care of. To prevent long-term and costly damage, follow these top five tips for roofing maintenance.

1. Inspect your roof regularly

If you can see your roof from the ground, it's sensible to take a good look at it from time to time, probably at least twice a year, so that you will notice when something starts to go wrong. Binoculars may be useful, as can taking a look from a neighbor's property. Look out for loose or missing tiles in particular, and see if the roof is suffering from wear and tear. Check that the chimney flashings are intact and that there are no missing sections to the guttering.

2. Look out for problem vegetation

Vegetation such as moss growing in the guttering can cause real property maintenance problems over time. You can probably see if there are pebbles or moss clogging up the roof itself or any sections of the guttering, if so, these need to be cleared away to stop them causing real problems. Moss, for example, may retain moisture and damage the roof covering in the winter months. A job like this is far easier to do during the summer months.

3. Act quickly

Where there is a clear problem, such as a leaking roof, it is important to act fast as roofing maintenance issues can spiral in magnitude and cost over time if not properly addressed. Have missing slates or shingles replaces before further damage, for example to plaster ceilings or roof timbers, occurs. Other warning signs to look out for include daylight penetration, debris on the ground from broken shingles or slates, and signs of mortar droppings in the gutters or gullies. If you use a fuel fire, smoke exiting through brickwork or at the base of chimney pots may also point to serious roofing maintenance needs.

4. Bring in the experts

Amateur roofing maintenance work can be dangerous and costly. If in doubt, ask a surveyor for advice or bring in the experts and get the job done properly by an accredited roofing maintenance team. Genuine roofing experts are often accredited by The National Federation of Roofing Contractors, The Guild of Master Craftsmen or The Federation of Master Builders - look out for these certifications before choosing your team. Unskilled labor or quick-fix options are likely to lead to greater costs in the long run. Expert advice may be required if you have leaning chimneys or pots, and unusual roofing coverings such as lead or thatch may need to be inspected by specialists.

5. Get a few quotes

To make sure you find the right people to take care of your roofing maintenance, don't be afraid to ask for a few quotes from local property maintenance experts. That doesn't always mean going for the cheapest option, however - always take into account the experience and reputation of the roofers you are employing.

Choosing Your Vinyl Siding

When it comes to any home building decisions, most homeowners take aesthetics, durability, and cost into account. Deciding on siding is no different. Vinyl siding comes from many manufacturers with different qualities. After quality of the siding product, the professionalism of the Denver siding company is the next most important, because you want the materials to be installed right, and have the peace of mind in knowing that the company will fix any problems they may cause.

Even within the same vinyl siding company, there is significant variation among products. The most important aspect is panel thickness. Vinyl is a very weather resistant material. It is also flexible, and installing siding that is too thin may result in being able to see the wall underneath poking through. I have also witnessed many instances of Denver vinyl siding being punctured relatively easily. The material survives weather well, but physical wear and tear can destroy vinyl quickly, especially if it is of the thinner variety. Only a tenth of an inch more can make a great difference with vinyl, so ask your Denver vinyl siding company for a cost breakdown for an upgrade. Upgrading the quality or thickness of the material should not cost all that much more overall.

Vinyl siding made by cheap companies sometimes stiffens with age, which can lead to cracks. This is another reason to get thicker siding. If you pick a smaller company and a unique color, you may be in for some major problems if the siding gets damages and you want a localized replacement. The probability that the same company is still carrying a matching replacement is not so good. So most siding contractors recommend you pick a trusted company in simple colors and design. This does not mean you have to go with off-white but consult with your contractor on a siding manufacturer you both trust.

Looking for a Metal Roof?

When it's time to get your roof replaced on your commercial property you may want to consider the option of a metal roof. A metal roof has a longer life span than a shingle roof because it is less complex than a shingle roof. With a traditional shingle roof, regardless of what type of material is used, the system has several potential areas for future problems occurring.

If the shingles are not laid correctly water can find a path in and create leaks and water damage. If nails are not hammered in all the way a good windstorm can lift them up and create a path for water to enter. Flashings around vents and the fireplace have to be caulked in correctly or again there is yet another entry point for water damage. Plus in order to replace a roof the old roof must be torn off. That's a lot of shingles, nails and tar paper in a landfill not degrading as they take up precious space. A metal roof on the other hand can be laid on top of an existing roof eliminating not only the waste of putting a roof in the landfill but also in not paying for the labor to have the roof removed in the first place.

It does not matter what the old roof looked like or functioned like it will not affect the ability of the new roof- the metal one to do its job of looking good and preventing the elements from getting into your building.

And let's face it you want and need the best roof possible for your commercial building. Water damage from leaks can create havoc on office equipment, including the multitude of computers, printers, fax machines and telephones that are in the typical office space. A metal roof is not going to develop the same problematic conditions that a traditional roof will and it will be maintenance free.

Increase the Value of Your Home!

You need not spend a whole lot of money to give your house a great makeover. You only need to use innovatively designed and attractive sidings like vinyl sidings in order to give your house a good face lift. These vinyl sidings are available in many colors and the good thing about them is the fact that they can be fitted over wood, bricks and over concrete as well. It is this flexibility of the material along with its insulation qualities that has made it the preferred material for sidings. When such sidings are fitted by the right kind of contractor, the job can be done in quick time and without much hassle to you.

With new vinyl sidings, your home can get an upgraded look pretty quickly and thanks to trendy colors, you can go ahead and match these sidings with the colors you have on the window and door frames. That itself will lend a new character to your home and its value will appreciate.

The advantages of vinyl sidings over aluminum ones or that of aluminum over vinyl is debatable and is a question of individual choice. One advantage is that color of vinyl sidings remain solid and do not get spoilt. With aluminum sidings, due to the paint being baked, upon scratching, the paint can peel off and the metal can get exposed.

New sidings thus have a lot of advantages to offer. They offer a cost effective way to revamp your house and due to savings they can provide in terms of energy, they are a worthwhile investment to go for. The great improvement they provide in looks is yet another factor why they are being preferred by many house owners, especially where properties are some years old and the owners cannot afford going for a new house.

Finding a Roofer for You

If you need work done on your roof, it is time to start looking for a professional to do the job. Trying to do it yourself is quite dangerous even if you know what you are doing since it requires getting up on your roof to finish the task. Your time is better spent looking for a roofing expert, so find out how to locate a good one.

In most cases, you can ask people you know if they know the name of a good roofing professional. However, unlike other household tasks, getting work done to the roof is not exactly common unless there was a recent storm that damaged many homes. Therefore, do not expect to come up with too many leads by asking friends, family, and neighbors.

If you could not get any recommendations from people you know, check out the internet for a free way to find roofing professionals. Many people like to post reviews online of their recent experiences with roofing experts. You should peruse such reviews to find out the good and bad of local companies before you hire anyone. Some just offer ratings with few details, while other review sites encourage users to list why they liked or did not like the job that was done to their home. The latter is likely to be most helpful for you.

If you just want a list of roofing contractors so that you can get started calling for quotes, you can look in your local phone book. You should find the contact information of local roofers, along with ads that discuss the services they offer. This way, you can start calling around and collecting price quotes before you decide on anyone.

Some roofing companies send out coupons to homes, or feature them in the newspaper. Look for these to collect a few names of companies, as well as savings. Church bulletins and local newsletters should also feature advertisements, some of which could be for companies that offer household repairs. Such ads may also boast savings, so be sure to look for these.

Emergency Roofing Repair

Emergency roof repair is a must to deal with roof holes and pouring water. Once you get supplies and items ready, you can start up with the work. All you need here are tin snips, staple guns, nails, plastic sheeting and hammers. The first step towards emergency roof repair is cutting out a piece of flashing or sheet metal six inches larger than the area under repair.

Use temporary piece of hammer and wood, nailing through flashing or sheet metal and attaching everything at one time to the roof. You can even use sheet plastic over the wood repair and sheet metal. Get some additional wood pieces and nail them over sheet metal, but as larger patches. In case the damage is close enough to your roof pinnacle, run plastic over to the sides, hammering strips of wood along the exterior edges.

In case you don't have enough wood for emergency roof repair work, use staples to tack the sheet plastic and metal over damaged area. Whatever you do, ensure it is placed tightly against the roof. In case it blows off in another storm, there is a high likelihood that it would injure someone.

Wind is usually a strong force and you would hope to ensure that everything is safe and secure on the roof. Few important tips that would help during roof repair is to use tool belt to prevent you from running errands. This is much safer. For storms, gear up with non-slippery shoes.

Important Tips

Emergency roof repair is highly essential to prevent degradation of your roof. Leaks are pretty major problem, and need to be immediately resolved. Else there is a high risk of widespread damage. Heavy storms such as hurricanes can wreak havoc, and the best way to deal with it is to keep everyone involved.

Do You Want Lap Siding?

Often, the present looks to the past for ideas and inspiration. Nowhere is that more in evidence than in the construction and architectural world. A prime example of this borrowing from the past can be found in lap siding.

The beautiful simplicity of lap or clapboard siding is a big part of what makes it so popular, especially today. The overlapping horizontal planks of wood were originally used more as a practical exterior rather than with an eye specifically towards aesthetics. But, as it turns out, the clean appearance became a signature look in Colonial America and has been emulated and copied ever since.

And it's not just the eastern part of the United States that feels the indelible mark and contribution of lap siding. Though each region has its signature look, from Mid-Western brick to Southwestern adobe and stucco, lap siding can be found with regularity all through the United States.

It's popularity has spread across all lines of manufacturing materials as well. In the past, whatever kind of wood that was milled in a particular area or region was what determined, in large part what material was used for this kind of siding. Now, when it comes to actual wood, cedar is the material of choice. Because it is a replenish-able natural resource and is highly weather, fungus and pest resistant, cedar makes perfect sense if you want recreate the look and feel of the past with a great deal of exactness.

Keeping Your Roofing Green!

Everyone is familiar with the green tubs put out on the curb every couple of weeks or so, with their distinctive triangular arrow symbol. While recycling goes back quite far in human history, not until World War II did modern recycling policies begin taking hold. Still, only 32-35% of the garbage Americans generate each year is recycled; this number could be much higher. It begins not only with collecting recyclable goods and manufacturing new products from them, but purchasing said products as well.

Moving into the area of energy we find various ways of maintaining a green agenda by cutting down on waste and costs. Wind energy is, and should be, an increasing phenomenon of recent years, and by selling excess electricity back to the power grid everyone wins. By using ENERGY STAR-labeled products an energy bill can be lowered by up to 30%. Thermostats programmed to your schedule can make a world of difference as well.

When it comes to roofing several things can be considered. From supplying electricity, or collecting water, to simply helping to cool an area, a roof can play a major role in the immediate environment. Whether it is a new roof or a repair job, things to look at include recycled synthetic shingles, an eco-roof, or solar roof shingles. Synthetic shingles can be made from recycled plastic, rubber, and wood waist. Some of these have a 50-year life span, and are UV and fire resistant. Biodiverse green roofs (or eco-roofs) can be intensive or extensive.

If extensive, the roof generally sustains itself, left on its own with herbs and grasses over a layer of shallow soil. An intensive eco-roof provides deeper soil for larger plants and trees, and can be used for recreation. Biodiverse green roofs are becoming increasingly popular in urban settings. The price of photovoltaic systems is also falling gradually, and with government incentives solar shingles should become more and more common in the coming years. This should always be considered for any unobstructed roof, and with the right roof more than one of these ideas can be combined.

Have You Heard of Liquid Siding?

Vinyl siding is used in nearly 40 percent of new, single-family homes, followed in popularity by brick, stucco, cement, and wood. But now, liquid siding has joined the competition for homeowners examining their options. This spray-on vinyl siding material is said to resist rot, corrosion and denting known to wood or aluminum siding products. So far, it is offered through professional liquid siding contractors and is not currently good candidate material for home do-it-yourselfers (DIY). That's because its overall effectiveness is based on the preparation of the base surface and precision application.

Wondering how to apply this type of siding? If you're considering a DIY project, think twice. All exterior fixtures must be removed, landscaping must be draped or protected, wall bases must be trenched to allow full coverage, and the exterior walls must be prepped through a pressure wash cleaner designed for liquid siding installations. Exterior surfaces showing moisture damage must be repaired, surfaces should be scraped and sanded, and all parts of the surface that won't be sprayed (windows, soffits, etc.) must be covered, sealed, or caulked.

Four-Step Application

At some point, there may be a DIY installation kit, but for now the process is handled by licensed installers. Much of this is due to the need for proper surface preparation. Manufacturers say that application is completed in a four-step process including surface conditioning, primers and sealers, thermal-coating, and a topcoat application. Liquid siding is said to resist chipping and peeling, as well as fighting off mold, water, and mildew. It's produced in hundreds of color choices and can be maintained by water from your garden hose.

While today vinyl siding prices are reasonable, liquid siding offers a potentially even more cost effective alternative - even when factoring in labor.
